Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari calls for simultaneous polls in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, criticising Islamabad's governance approach.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari recently addressed an election rally in Shigar, Gilgit-Baltistan, emphasizing the party’s commitment to securing the rights of people living in the region. During his speech on June 1, 2026, Bilawal highlighted the need for simultaneous polls in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) alongside the country's general elections.
Bilawal criticized Islamabad’s governance approach, which he believes is overly centralized. He argued that this approach often overlooks the unique needs and aspirations of GB and AJK, leading to a sense of marginalization among the local population. The PPP Chairman emphasized that simultaneous polls would ensure greater representation and participation from these regions in national decision-making processes.
Bhutto-Zardari further stressed on the importance of addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by people in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. He pledged that if elected, his party would work towards improving infrastructure, education, healthcare, and overall development in these areas. By advocating for simultaneous elections, Bilawal aims to bring about a more inclusive and representative democratic process.
The call for simultaneous polls comes at a time when the region is grappling with issues such as infrastructure deficits, limited access to basic services, and political disenfranchisement. Bilawal’s stance reflects the growing demand among local leaders and residents for greater autonomy and recognition within the broader framework of Pakistan's federal structure.
